Mattress Care Guide
A Note on Your Home Environment
Every home is different and the environment within your home will inevitably influence the care requirements of your mattress. Modern, energy-efficient and airtight homes can create conditions that differ significantly from older properties, particularly in relation to temperature, humidity and ventilation. While these homes are highly effective at retaining heat and improving energy efficiency, they can also retain moisture if adequate ventilation is not maintained.
Airflow in the Home
As we naturally release moisture during sleep, elevated humidity levels within a bedroom may affect the freshness, performance and longevity of a mattress over time. For this reason, it is important to ensure good airflow within the room and around the mattress itself. To help maintain a healthy sleep environment:
- Keep bedrooms well ventilated
- Use mechanical ventilation or extractor systems where fitted.
- Pull back bed linen regularly to allow the mattress to breathe.
- Monitor humidity levels where possible.
- Ensure airflow around bed bases and beneath the mattress where applicable.
- Follow the manufacturer's recommendations regarding care, rotation and maintenance.
Mattress Materials Explained
Luxury mattresses often contain a combination of natural and technical fillings designed to provide comfort, support, breathability and durability. Natural materials may display variations in colour and tone, texture and feel, natural fibre and fillings, firmness and comfort perception. These differences are a reflection of the authenticity of the materials used and should be celebrated as part of their character rather than viewed as defects.
- Wool – A naturally breathable and resilient fibre that helps regulate temperature and moisture throughout the night while providing comfort and cushioning.
- Cotton – Soft, breathable and moisture absorbent, helping to create a comfortable sleeping environment.
- Cashmere – A premium natural fibre known for its softness, warmth and luxurious feel.
- Mohair – Derived from Angora goats, mohair is strong, resilient and durable while remaining exceptionally soft.
- Horsehair – Traditionally used in luxury mattresses, horsehair is highly resilient, naturally springy and excellent at dispersing moisture.
- Coir - Made from coconut fibres, coir provides strength, durability and additional support within the mattress structure.
- Latex - A naturally responsive material that moulds to the body's shape while providing supportive pressure relief and comfort.
- Foam & Memory Foam – Designed to contour to the body, helping to distribute weight evenly and reduce pressure points. Comfort and feel may vary with room temperature and individual body heat.
New Mattress Expectations
New Mattress Feel
A new mattress may feel different from the mattress you have replaced. This is completely normal. Your previous mattress will have adapted to your body over many years, whereas your new mattress is designed to provide improved support and comfort.
Allow several weeks for:- Your body to adjust
- Comfort layers to settle
- Fillings to respond to regular use
Settlement and Body Impression
All mattresses will experience some settlement of fillings over time, particularly those containing generous layers of natural materials and luxury comfort fillings.
You may notice:- Slight body impressions
- Softening of comfort layers
- Natural compression of upholstery fillings
Mattress Odour
When your new mattress is first unpacked, you may notice a slight odour that is normal and not harmful.
This can occur due to:- Natural fibres and fillings
- Fresh upholstery materials
- Foam and comfort layers
- Packaging during transportation and storage
