Understanding Carpet Characteristics
Every carpet type has unique natural traits, from initial yarn shedding and stray tufts to subtle shading and flattening caused by light and daily foot traffic.
Understanding how different pile constructions react to vacuuming, furniture weight, and sunlight ensures your floor coverings wear evenly and stay looking fresh.
Understanding Different Types of Carpets & Rugs
- Loop Pile Carpets – Features looped fibres that should be vacuumed using a cylinder suction head only. Beater bars and brush heads must be avoided as they lift and catch the fibres, giving a bobbled or felted appearance.
- Cut Pile Carpets – Consists of cut fibre ends that are best maintained using an upright vacuum cleaner with a beater bar and brush attachment to lift dust effectively.
- Natural Wool & Spun Yarn – Pure new wool and spun yarns shed excess short fibres when first installed. This is completely normal, expected, and does not affect carpet durability.
- Shading, Flattening & Pile Reversal – Regular foot traffic naturally flattens carpet pile in main walkways. Pile direction shifts (or "watermarking") reflect light at different angles, creating permanent natural shading effects.
- Sample & Batch Matching – Swatch samples serve as a guide and may not perfectly match current stock due to production batch variations. Laying carpet with the pile travelling in different directions can also cause color variance.

Vacuuming & Daily Maintenance
- ✓ Vacuum your carpet at least two to three times a week
- ✓ Vacuum loop pile carpets using a cylinder cleaner with suction head only
- ✓ Vacuum cut pile carpets using an upright cleaner with a beater bar
- ✓ Use a large, strong doormat at entrances to reduce outside dirt tracking
- ✓ Trim stray tufts on cut pile carpet level with surrounding pile using sharp scissors
- ✓ Carefully clip pilling or bobbles with scissors on loop pile or wool blend carpets
Protection & Positioning
- ✓ Move furniture occasionally to avoid constant abrasion and pile distortion
- ✓ Use a coin to gently tease the carpet pile upright to lift furniture indentations
- ✓ Use sun blinds or curtains in bright rooms to reduce direct sunlight fading
- ✓ Ask your retailer about shifting stair carpet to compensate for nosing wear

Vacuuming & Maintenance
- ✕ Don't use beater heads or brushes on loop pile carpets
- ✕ Don't pull stray tufts or loose threads. Always cut them with sharp scissors
- ✕ Avoid laying light-coloured carpets next to external entrances where possible
- ✕ Avoid leaving loose dirt and dust to build up in the carpet pile
Treatments & Protection
- ✕ Don't over-saturate the carpet when applying stain guards or aftermarket treatments
- ✕ Avoid constant heavy wear from pet claws and rubber-soled shoes in concentrated areas
- ✕ Don't allow direct, unshaded sunlight to hit carpets in south-facing rooms
